Is there a God?

The first and foremost reason for anyone to reject the notion of a God is that "There are so many ills in the society. If God is there, why isn't He doing anything about it?"

These are the common questions that are asked to justify their argument for no God!
  • If there is an all loving, all powerful God, why so much evil in the world?
  • If God is all powerful and loving, why is there suffering in the world?
The answer to the above is discussed in detail in fate vs freewill, as a separate article.

Before we try to find out is there a God

We have to understand that we are part of a larger system; a system that works like clockwork. We can know and understand this by looking around us. And we also know that everything in this world of ours, follows a certain order; a certain hierarchy.

That alone is reason enough to believe that there is a God. This God may be a highly evolved version of us. And there may be more than one. But, there is somebody at the top, calling the shots.

We do not know what is there or who is out there. But, we can infer based on our experiences and our knowledge of the existing systems.

We have a government and its hierarchy. We see these systems everywhere. In colonies of ants, bees and elsewhere. You have someone at the top; at the bottom and in between.

Stephen Hawking seems to have said recently, "Before we understand science, it is natural to believe that God created the universe. But now science offers a more convincing explanation."

But, what amount of science do we know? Very little. For one thing that can be explained by our present knowledge of science, there are a hundred things that baffle us.

The truth is that we really do not know. And because we think we know everything, we do stupid things. How else can we explain exploding nuclear devices underground, disregarding the consequences which are unknown?

Because there is a system, we should know that whatever we think, say or do, will have the consequences based on our actions.

So, whether we believe God is there or not, it is imperative for our own good that we understand that we are part of a global or possibly a universal system, which is based on action and reaction.

So, the idea of a God [whether or not He/She exists] may have been to ensure that people followed certain rules, out of fear at least. But, with God out of the way, it may become difficult to make sure that people do not go the wrong way.

And when man goes the wrong way, destruction is invariably the result.
